If you're going to be taking a holiday, you might want to avoid the crowds at the hotels and stay in a cottage instead. It's not something that everyone enjoys, but more and more people are beginning to see the benefits of it. If you choose the catered option you'll get the same kind of treatment that you get at a hotel (maid service, etc) but you'll pay less overall. You can also choose to stay in a self-catering cottage where you'll cook your own food and pick up after yourself. These cottages are less expensive than the catered versions and much less expensive than the hotels. Doing a little bit of work on your holiday certainly won't hurt you, and the money that you'll save could be well worth it. Before you book a cottage, though, ask questions. You want to know about the catering options, you want to know what you're required to do - and what you can't do - and you want to know the 'fine print.' Look at any contract or reservation information you're given very carefully. Don't sign something or agree to it online if you're not sure about it.
You don't have to choose the cheapest cottage to be frugal, and you don't have to choose the most expensive one to enjoy your trip. You should choose the holiday cottage that's right for you. Once you decide what area you're travelling to you can look around and see what cottages are nearby. How far away from the tourist attractions do you want to be? That's something worth considering, because you'll have to get from your cottage to the things that you want to see and do. How you do that likely depends on how far 'out of the way' the cottage is. If you don't have a car and need to walk or use public transportation to see the sights you'll probably want a cottage that's a little bit closer to where everything is. On the other hand, if you mainly came to the area to see nature and just enjoy the beauty and the peace of it, it might be better if the cottage you choose is a little bit farther out from town, so you won't have so many distractions.
