Crewe is a medium sized town in the County of Cheshire in England with a population of around 67,683. The town is well known for its association with railways, being a major junction and once home to a major railway works. Up until 2002 it was also the home of Rolls Royce, but when the factory stopped making the cars it was then taken over to produce Bentley motor cars. The town is also home to the football team Crewe Alexandra F.C, which is the only team in the country with this unusual suffix.
The town has rail access in the form of Crewe railway station that it less than a mile from the town centre. It is one of the largest stations in north west England, has 12 platforms and has direct line services to London, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff and many other major cities making it ideal if you are looking to
rent property in Crewe and want to commute. The town was actually built around this important junction when the railway first arrived in 1830.
Motorway access to the rest of the country is provided by the A530 and A534, the M6 motorway is less than 10 miles away from the town.
There are currently plans to revamp the town centre, with half of the town centre to be a rebuilt and a new street created.
One of the biggest attractions in Crewe is The Railway Age Museum, It features many locomotives including many steam trains and the ill-fated British Rail Advanced Passenger Train of the 1980s. It also has working signal boxes and many activities for children, as well as a birds eye view of the many trains leaving the north of Crewe station. The museum isn't as rigid as many railway museums and you are free to wander around the yards and locomotives at your leisure.
The town is a relatively small area that most attractions and amenities are within walking distance; the main centre has all the major chain stores you would expect to see in most high streets. The town also has some outdoor markets that are covered and sell local produce. For the food and drink side of the town, the “pi” bistro apparently serves good food at Crewe Hall, and for fans of real ales, you should try the pubs; The Crown and The Borough arms.
