France: Where to Camp in the South of France

A camping or self catering holiday in France is a great option for families. France is a large country with a rich variety of features and attractions. In this article we will look at some of features of the southern regions. The Mediterranean regions are Provance Cote d’Azur and Languedoc Roussillon.

  • Languedoc Roussillon banks the Mediterranean with beautiful beaches and ancient towns. It has about 160 miles of coastline, and the weather is mostly extremely pleasant. There is a range of famous cities to visit along with ancient Roman remains. Cassoulet is a famous dish of the region.

Provance Cote d’Azur is the famous French Riviera with St Tropez, Cannes and Nice as its best known celebrity resorts. Venturing inland away from the warm waters of the Mediterranean will reveal rich rolling pastures of sunflowers and vistas of gently rising hills and valleys; the inspiration of much French Impressionistic painting. If you like fish, then this is a major cuisine of the region along with exotic sweets.

Moving northwards to Midi Pyrenees we find an altogether different region with massive snow topped mountains and low lying valleys and rivers. The climate is different too. One day it may be warm and barmy, the next the mountains might be engulfed in mist. There are vast areas of unspoiled land and picturesque villages. The region includes the famous towns of Lourdes and Toulouse. The region is known for poultry dishes and Armagnac.

Bordering on Midi Pyrenees and Languedoc Roussillon is Auvergne. The region is very different from the others. It is a combination of rugged landscapes etched by volcanic eruptions along with green pasture and meadows. There are also vast forested areas and beautiful lakes and the region is known for its ancient castles and churches. Special liqueurs which are fermented from soothing spring waters infused with special herbs can be had. These complement the large range of fine cheeses for which the region is famous.

Great camping and self catering holiday facilities can be found in all of these regions so what are you waiting for?.. This years family holidays should be in France!
