Isle of Scilly in the Spotlight

The Isles of Scilly have been finding themselves in the spotlight recently with a number of appearances on TV. Just some of the recent exposure includes Top Gear, An Island Parish, Adidas TV commercial and the Tonight Show.

  • The Top Gear duo of James May and Richard Hammond visited the Isle of Scilly for last weeks show and used the beautiful islands as the start of there latest challenge. Islanders may have been pleased to see cantankerous Jeremy Clarkson stay at home as James and Richard arrived on the islands to see who could reach the Orkney Isles first, a car or a letter delivered by the Royal Mail. The challenged stared with the Top Gear presenters posting a letter at one of St Mary’s post boxes before heading to the harbour.

    James and Richard arrived on the mainland ahead of there first class letter and quickly increased there gap as the test drove the new Porsche Panamera along the South West’s A roads and Motorways. However the boy’s soon found themselves on the back foot once their first class letter was loaded onto one of the Royal Mails planes. As they played a game of cat and mouse across the country James and Richard finally arrived at their destination in the Orkney, however to their dismay the postman had got there first and they were greeted with the sight of there letter waiting for them.

    This is no the first time of late that the beautiful isle of Scilly have appeared on our Screens, BBC’s documentary “An Island Parish” takes place on the islands and is often seen to show just some of the stunning scenery that the island has to offer. The programme has certainly had an effect on the island with many people wanting to take a Scilly Island holiday after viewing the show.

    The Island also starred in a multimillion pound world wide ad campaign by sporting giants Adidas featuring none other than David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Patrick Vieira and Michael Ballack who visited St Mary’s and took a training session with the local kid’s football team. The ad was part of the companies Dream Big Campaign with world class footballers visiting teams and leagues who usually only ever get to see the big names of football on their TV screens. The Isles of Scilly where chosen because the Islands play host the worlds smallest league which comprises of just two teams.

    The Islands were also recently praised by British Hollywood star Jude Law who described the islands as the best place on earth during a recent interview with American TV legend David Letterman on his Tonight Show.
